Beyond prediction
The field grew out of a simple observation. Organizations that survive discontinuity are rarely the ones that call the future correctly. They are the ones that perceive change earlier and respond with more strategic flexibility.
From Pierre Wack’s scenario work at Royal Dutch Shell in the 1970s to the anticipatory governance frameworks now shaping public policy, strategic foresight has grown from a niche planning technique into a full discipline for institutional intelligence.
A discipline, not a department
Traditional strategic planning assumes the future is knowable and optimizes for one trajectory. Foresight works in the space of uncertainty. It asks three plain questions. What could change? What would it mean? How would we know?
The field pulls together methods from systems science, cognitive psychology, decision theory, and organizational learning into a coherent practice. Eight intellectual threads run through its history. Each one contributes tools and frameworks a serious practitioner needs on hand.
