    The problem foresight solves

    A strategy built for one future is fragile when a different one arrives.

    Most planning produces a single expected future and a strategy tuned to it. That strategy performs well if the expected future is the one that shows up, and it degrades quickly when the world takes a different path. The failure is rarely a lack of data. It is that the plan was never tested against the range of futures that could actually happen.

    Control systems, the dashboards, KPIs, and quarterly reviews, measure what already happened, and they are essential for that. What they cannot do is tell you whether a strategy holds up across the futures still ahead. That requires building those futures deliberately and stress-testing the strategy against each one, which is the work of strategic foresight.
